{"id":30661,"date":"2021-03-08T12:25:02","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T12:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheffieldwire.co.uk\/?p=30661"},"modified":"2021-03-08T12:25:02","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T12:25:02","slug":"at-the-intersection-of-two-pandemics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/03\/08\/at-the-intersection-of-two-pandemics\/","title":{"rendered":"At the intersection of two pandemics \u2013 Paul Blomfield and Ashiana raise awareness of domestic violence for International Women\u2019s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sheffield&#8217;s BAMER communities have suffered a domestic violence pandemic in the face of COVID-19, sparking a 50 per cent rise in charity referrals in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>This statistic has become the central point of this year\u2019s International Women\u2019s Day event hosted by Sheffield Central MP, Paul Blomfield, in collaboration with the Sheffield-based domestic abuse charity, Ashiana.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Blomfield launched the yearly event in 2010 both to celebrate the achievements of women and to recognise the challenges they face.<\/p>\n<p>The event at 7pm tonight will provide a forum for discussion around the increasing prominence of this issue within BAMER (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee) communities.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cIt\u2019s a very small contribution to an awareness campaign to enable men to change their behaviour and women to have the confidence to report it when they don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019m raising money for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AshianaShef?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AshianaShef<\/a>, a great local charity helping to support domestic abuse victims, this <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IWD2021?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IWD2021<\/a>.
