{"id":29171,"date":"2021-02-15T12:29:42","date_gmt":"2021-02-15T12:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jus.shef.ac.uk\/sheffieldwire\/?p=29171"},"modified":"2021-02-15T12:29:42","modified_gmt":"2021-02-15T12:29:42","slug":"masterchef-star-set-to-smash-world-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/02\/15\/masterchef-star-set-to-smash-world-record\/","title":{"rendered":"MasterChef star set to smash world record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former MasterChef UK contestant from Sheffield has taken on the Guinness World Record for most people cooking simultaneously online.<\/p>\n<p>Over 800 people from four continents attended Raheel Mirza\u2019s virtual event last Friday, including BBC presenter Matt Allwright.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mirza said: \u201cWe\u2019ve got people here from America, we\u2019ve got people here from New Zealand and Iceland and Norway, all over.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The attempt, which is likely to dwarf the current record of 176 people, must be checked by Guinness World Records before it can be announced on <em>The One Show<\/em> this Friday at 7pm.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Allwright welcomed the opportunity to take part and congratulated Mr Mirza.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI love cooking &#8211; but I miss cooking for and with my friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaheel has brought together a huge community of friends who can share a moment of joy, followed by a lovely tea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all fuelled by his enthusiasm and love of food. What a wonderful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also helping was Mr Mirza&#8217;s daughter Isla, who is a frequent guest on other virtual cooking classes he has since his appearance on MasterChef.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cWithout her technical support, I would really struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isla said: \u201cBecause we\u2019re expecting such a big number, we\u2019re like 827 is not much.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29197\" style=\"width: 574px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29197\" class=\"wp-image-29197\" src=\"https:\/\/jus.shef.ac.uk\/sheffieldwire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/02\/Raheel-1-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Raheel-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Raheel-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Raheel-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/sheffieldwire.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Raheel-1-1536x864.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raheel Mirza teaches an audience of over 800 how to cook his signature butter chicken.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr Mirza featured in season 16, episode 9 of MasterChef UK, impressing judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace with his personal touches on classic dishes, but losing out to Claire, Natasha and Sam in the final challenge.<\/p>\n<p>For his world record attempt, he guided his audience through his signature butter chicken recipe, with paneer and tofu options available for vegetarians and vegans.<\/p>\n<p>Many used the event as an opportunity to do something different with their households during the third national lockdown. Rachael Ward, an optical manager from Doncaster, took part with her partner and teenage children.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;This was a fantastic opportunity for us and others to have a little fun in these difficult times and it certainly made our Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll definitely be tuning into <em>The One Show<\/em> as I&#8217;m eager to find out if we beat the record.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former MasterChef UK contestant from Sheffield has taken on the Guinness World Record for most people cooking simultaneously online.
